Community Engagement Officer - Nature: Connections & Recovery

Status: 35 hours per week / Fixed term for 18 months with the possibility of extension dependent on funding
Salary: £28,115 per annum pro rata
Location: Montrose Basin Visitor Centre / Dundee / hybrid

Overall Purpose of the Role
To plan and deliver the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Nature Pioneers Programme in Dundee, with consecutive cohorts of established and aspiring community leaders.
The Nature Pioneers Programme is a free skills development course for people who want to organise action for nature where they live. The programme combines online learning, interactive webinars and in-person events, plus 1:1 support, to provide participants with the understanding, resources and confidence they need.
The Nature Pioneers Programme will be delivered in Dundee as the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s contribution to the Nature: Connections and Recovery Project, a partnership project led by the Eden Project.
About The Nature: Connections and Recovery Project
The Nature: Connections and Recovery Project will target communities across the UK which are worst affected by climate change and health inequalities. The programme will connect people with nature to boost health and wellbeing, while equipping communities with the skills and confidence to take climate-positive action locally.
The project will focus on greater access, engagement, co-design and involvement in nature recovery of people and communities experiencing poverty, discrimination and disadvantage as these are groups likely to be most impacted by environmental changes. The project will commit to tackling inequities and identifying opportunities to increase engagement and meaningful participation in project related decision making from these communities.
Main objectives:
1. Carry out listening exercises with communities to gain a deeper understanding of their awareness and interests in relation to climate change and community-led nature recovery in Dundee.
2. Further develop existing Pioneers Programme content to provide established and aspiring community leaders in Dundee with the skills and resources they need to organise action for nature in their community.
3. Build relationships within target communities across Dundee, including strategic partnerships with existing community groups and organisations.
4. Work with local partners to encourage community leaders in Dundee to apply to take part in the Pioneers Programme.
5. Lead on the delivery of the Pioneers Programme across a series of 6-month cohorts: plan and deliver a programme of online and in-person events for participants, in partnership with local organisations and external speakers and trainers.
6. Provide one-to-one guidance and support to programme participants, acting as their main point of contact throughout the project duration.
7. Collect relevant data on participant engagement and impact to support project evaluation and funder reporting.
8. Undertake other tasks as appropriate that support the delivery of the Nature Recovery and Connections project.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a relevant role
Essential experience
- Demonstrable experience of successfully engaging with community leaders to inspire action at a
- community-level
- Experience planning and delivering community engagement events.
- Experience of partnership working
- Basic knowledge and understanding of urban wildlife conservation and climate action
- Familiarity with Dundee city and its local communities
Desirable experience
- Experience of engaging with disadvantaged and/or minority audiences
- Experience developing learning and/or skills development resources
- Experience of engaging communities with nature
